A Jungian Reading of the Dark Knight and Batman Begins

. Destroying Gotham would mean destroying the Shadow, and this according to Jung is simply unattainable .
This paper sought to define the elements of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight compatible with the Jungian Shadow . Although both films appear to present similar elements alluding to the Shadow, the elements most compatible with Jung’s theory differ in each . Present in both films are characters that can be viewed as fundamentally opposed to one another, although the Joker and Batman more closely resemble the Shadow and self than do Ducard and Batman . The element of Jung’s theory most compatible with The Dark Knight surrounded the Shadow itself and the process of individuation, whereas it was the theory of projection most compatible with Batman Begins . Furthermore, while The Dark Knight is fundamentally opposed to Jung’s theory as it relates to the film, Batman Begins supports Jung’s position of projection . This may seem relatively obvious, as if the film did not see Ducard fail, it would surely be charged with anti-Semitism . Similarly, both films appear to present cautionary tales of what the Shadow is capable of . The relationship between Jung’s theory and these two films presents an insight into politics as well, and for future research it would be interesting to analyze the implications of this .
