Due to these characteristics I think Socrates is still an inspiring figure in society today. Socrates makes some strong points in the Apology and perhaps ones that we should live by today . He is not just defending himself but also every person’s right and obligation to observe the truth no matter what social pressure is exerted. In today’s society this is still a problem and because of this Socrates is still an inspirational individual.

His primary defence is against the false image that has been portrayed of him. Due to Socrates huge appeal the authorities saw him as a huge threat to their political will and they felt the need to create a false public image of him in an effort to thwart his social status. This was created “with a media-image presenting Socrates as just another idiotic an unprincipled intellectual on the make (Lecture Notes, 2008)”. This is very similar to the way events are today. It is those in power who make opinions both good and bad about others. These opinions are often accepted because even if people don’t particularly agree with what they hear, they are too afraid to go against the person in power.
